From American Life League’s Michael Hichborn:
Sr. Margaret McBride, who was the head of the ethics committee for St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, personally authorized the abortion of an 11-week pre-term baby. This act incurred automatic excommunication, but the response from dissident “Catholic” media outlets was to attack the innocent instead of the guilty.
Re: Sister McBride story:
–The procedure used was a high-risk attempt to save the life of the child–an INDIRECT abortion.
–Sr. McBride concurred in the procedure after it having been OK’d by an outside ethics panel.
–The media did not have the story until the Bishop gave it to them with his announcement of the “automatic excommunication” (which, in fact, does NOT apply to an indirect abortion). In other words there was no compelling need for the Bishop to go public to “avoid scandal”.
–By going public, the Bishop not only succeeded in muddying the waters, he also succeeded in having Sr. McBride dismissed from her religious order.
The biggest question remains unanswered–Why did the Bishop do what he did?
